The Elements; Fire, Air, Earth and Water represent the four states of matter – Plasma, Gas, Solid and Liquid. The four states of matter represent the molecular building blocks; Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon and Hydrogen.
These Elements also have metaphysical attributes; the Fire represents the Spirit or energy within that is the metaphorical spark of life, the Air represents the Mind and thought in general considered the realm of cause, the Earth represents the Physical body and the material world of effects, and the Water represents the Emotions and the experience of depth related to feelings.
Elements act as metaphors for our human condition, and though they appear to act individually they can only truly be considered in relation to each other and they cannot be separated in concept or practice. They are bound together in the Aether or the “field”, infused into states of material condition as is all life and as such; they are a perfect way to understand certain aspects of human existence.
Humanity experiences the fiery nature of intuition and the desire to act expressing the Fire element. The Air element is experienced as contemplation and abstract conceptual thoughtforms which are required to fuel the Fire of creation. The Earth element is that very manifestation; the material expression of the thoughtform on the physical plane. The Water element is the internal impression that the thoughtform reflects on the psychophysical form. The binding agent in this case is the “self”.
